New Noise: Morgan Wade

Upon the release of her new track “Take Me Away”, the alternative artist talks her biggest musical inspirations and the success of her debut album

There is nothing sweeter than the sound of a country-tinged, alternative ballad to usher in your Thursday morning, and Morgan Wade is here to provide you with just that. Accompanied by a melancholic music video, the singer has dropped her latest tune “Take Me Away” which beautifully unites warm-toned instrumentation and Morgan’s twangy vocals in perfect unison, and the result? A ballad-esque display with a soulful core and lyricism sure to enchant upon first listen.

When contemplating how his new track came to be, Morgan explained, “I remember writing ‘Take Me Away’ about three years ago whilst sitting in my kitchen. It was a really organic song. I wrote it in one take – and that was it. It sounds too simple to be true, but it is.”

Upon the release of her new track, the artist sat down with Wonderland to reflect on the success of her debut album, the inspiration that Elvis has had on her sound and confess how simply “Take Me Away” came to fruition. Head below to enjoy our interview with Morgan Wade…

Let’s start at the beginning! When did you first get involved with music?

I’ve been writing songs for as long as I can remember. I started playing the violin at the age of seven, and eventually stopped and moved on to the guitar. I started playing music live when I was 19, and I’ve been doing it ever since.

Who would you cite as your biggest musical inspiration?

Elvis Presley is my biggest musical inspiration, for sure. No contest.

Last year, you received a lot of attention for your debut album, Reckless! Were you nervous to release your first fully formed project?

I was extremely nervous to release Reckless. You only get one debut, and I had worked really hard on the record. I knew it was a very vulnerable record as well so there was added pressure when I thought about that.

What was the production process behind the album like? Do you have any music-making rituals?

We didn’t have any rituals. The process for writing this record came down to there being no process. I just wrote songs when they came to me and worked on the record over a three-year period. I wanted it to feel natural and be as genuine as possible. No rushing.

You recently performed Reckless before a live UK audience for the first time at C2C Festival earlier this month. What was that like?

It was amazing that the first time I played in the UK, the audience gave me a standing ovation after playing my songs. I expected to have a great time, but I didn’t expect that. I’ll be thinking about that one for a while. I loved every moment of my first trip over and I can’t wait to come back.

When it came to your new song “Take Me Away”, what was the creative process like?

I remember writing “Take Me Away” about three years ago whilst sitting in my kitchen. It was a really organic song. I wrote it in one take – and that was it. It sounds too simple to be true, but it is.

What is next? Are there any other projects you are keen to work on?

There’s so much! I’m really looking forward to touring a lot this year and, of course, writing for a new record which I’ve already started doing. I’m grateful that so many cool opportunities and support has been coming my way.
